Knox College, which is located in the USA, is providing merit-based scholarships to international students. If you’re interested to study in the USA, then Knox College is your go-to place!
Rather than a traditional semester-based approach, Knox uses a 3–3 academic calendar. Students take three courses in each of the three 10-week terms. Each term, faculty members teach two courses, giving them more time for one-on-one mentoring.
All Knox courses share common elements, such as an educational plan created by students. Knox Manual Labor College was founded by Presbyterians and Congregationalists from New York state, led by George Washington Gale, who had previously founded the Oneida Institute. Gale published a “Circular and Plan” for the establishment of manual labour colleges in 1936, which described a subscriber- and land purchase-based funding method.
When subscribers settled in what became Galesburg and began to build the college in 1837, his plan resulted in the establishment of at least one school. Knox began accepting students in 1843 and was one of the first to admit blacks and women. Many of the founders of Knox College and Galesburg residents, like Gale, were abolitionists who actively supported the Underground Railroad.
Knox has had its current name since 1857. The name was chosen as a compromise by the company’s founders. Despite being founded by a colony of Presbyterians and Congregationalists, the county where the college is located was already named Knox County after Henry Knox, the first Secretary of War of the United States. There has also been speculation that the college was named after Calvinist leader John Knox. It is unknown which Knox it was named after (if not both). According to George Candee Gale, a great-great-grandson of two of the founders,
According to my father, Knox was not named after either General Knox or the Scottish Presbyterian Knox, contrary to popular belief…. Some wanted the college to be named after one Knox, while others wanted it to be named after the other, so they settled on KNOX. Certainly, the majority of them were religious enough to desire the churchman and fighters enough to desire the soldier as well.
Jonathan Blanchard’s presidency helped the school get out of debt, but it also sparked a debate about whether the school was more loyal to the Congregational church or the Presbyterians. As a result, Gale and Blanchard were expelled from school. In 1858, Knox hosted the fifth debate between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas.
The only remaining site of the debates is the Old Main building. During his presidential campaign two years after the debates, Lincoln was awarded Knox College’s first honorary doctorate—a Doctor of Laws degree, which was announced at the commencement exercises on July 5, 1860.
