The University of Winnipeg (UWinnipeg, UW) is a public research university located in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. It provides undergraduate and graduate programs in art, business and economics, education, science and kinesiology, and applied health. Manitoba College and Wesley College were the two founding colleges of UWinnipeg, which united in 1938 to establish United College.
When United College acquired its charter in 1967, the University of Winnipeg was born. The governance was modeled after the 1906 provincial University of Toronto Act, which established a bicameral system of university government with a senate (faculty) in charge of academic policy and a board of governors (citizens) in charge of financial policy and formal authority in all other matters. The president, who was chosen by the board, served as a link between the various entities in order to provide institutional leadership.
The Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC), the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), the Canadian University Society for Intercollegiate Debate (CUSID), and U Sports are all members of the university.
Manitoba College was founded in 1871, while Wesley College was founded in 1888, and the two colleges amalgamated in 1938 to establish United College. United College was granted a charter in 1967 and became the University of Winnipeg. Wesley Hall (1894–5) was created by architects George Creeford Browne and S. Frank Peters and is currently part of the University of Winnipeg.
When United College acquired its charter on July 1, 1967, the University of Winnipeg was born. Manitoba College, founded in 1871, and Wesley College, founded in 1888, merged to form United College in 1938. United College was founded in 1967 and became the University of Winnipeg after being connected with the University of Manitoba.
The University of Winnipeg’s campus is comprised of 23 buildings that span several blocks of downtown Winnipeg, situated on Portage Avenue. The campus has had over ten new building construction or substantial refurbishment initiatives in the last decade. The University has become a catalyst for downtown redevelopment and improvement as a result of its revitalization.
The Rice Centre houses the administration and student services of the university.
The Buhler Centre was built to house the University of Winnipeg Faculty of Business and Economics, as well as PACE (Professional, Applied, and Continuing Education). The Buhler Centre first opened its doors in September of 2010.
