✅ Interesting Facts About Oxford University
Oxford University is a collegiate research university located in Oxford, England. There is evidence of teaching as early as 1096, making it the English-speaking world’s oldest university and the world’s second-oldest university in continuous operation. It grew rapidly after Henry II forbade English students from attending the University of Paris in 1167.
Following disagreements between students and Oxford residents in 1209, some academics fled north-east to Cambridge, where they founded what became the University of Cambridge. The two ancient English universities share many similarities and are collectively referred to as Oxbridge. Oxford is one of the world’s most prestigious universities.
The university is comprised of thirty-nine semi-autonomous constituent colleges, six permanent private halls, and a variety of academic departments divided into four divisions. Each college is a self-governing institution within the university, with its own membership and internal structure and activities. Every student is a member of a college. It lacks a main campus, and its buildings and facilities are dispersed throughout the city centre. Lectures, small-group tutorials at colleges and halls, seminars, laboratory work, and, on occasion, additional tutorials provided by central university faculties and departments comprise undergraduate teaching at Oxford. Postgraduate education is primarily provided centrally.
Oxford is home to the world’s oldest university museum, as well as the world’s largest university press and the nation’s largest academic library system. The university earned a total of £2.45 billion in the fiscal year ending 31 July 2019, with research grants and contracts accounting for £624.8 million of that total.
Oxford has produced a diverse range of notable alumni, including 28 British prime ministers and numerous heads of state and government from around the world. As of October 2020, 72 Nobel Prize laureates, three Fields Medalists, and six Turing Award winners had studied, worked, or held visiting fellowships at Oxford, and its alumni had won 160 Olympic medals. The Rhodes Scholarship, one of the oldest international graduate scholarship programmes, is based in Oxford.
