Butler University is a private institution located in Indianapolis, Indiana. Founded in 1855 and named after its founder, Ovid Butler, the university has over 60 major academic fields of study spread across six colleges: the Lacy School of Business, the College of Communication, the College of Education, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and the Jordan College of the Arts. Its 295-acre (119-hectare) campus is about five miles (8.0 kilometres) from downtown Indianapolis.
The Indiana General Assembly approved Ovid Butler’s proposed charter for a new Christian university in Indianapolis on January 15, 1850. The school opened on November 1, 1855, as North-Western Christian University at 13th Street and College Avenue on Indianapolis’ near northside, at the eastern edge of the present-day Old Northside Historic District, after a five-year development period. The land was donated by Ovid Butler, an attorney and the founder of the university.
Although the university was founded by members of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), it was never under the control of the church. The charter of the university called for it to be “a non-sectarian institution free from the taint of slavery, offering instruction in every branch of liberal and professional education.” The university was the first in Indiana and only the third in the country to admit both men and women.
In the state of Indiana, the university established the first professorship in English literature and the first Department of English. In honour of his daughter, Demia Butler, who died in 1867, Ovid Butler Butler University endowed the Demia Butler Chair of English Literature in 1869. Demia Butler was the first woman to graduate from the university’s Classical programme.
The chair was the first endowed position for a female professor at an American university. In 1869, Catharine Merrill became the first person to hold the Demia Butler Chair of English Literature. Merrill was only the country’s second female university professor. Susan Neville currently holds the Demia Butler Chair of English Literature.
In 1875, the university relocated to Irvington, on the east side of Indianapolis, and changed its name to Butler University in 1877.
In 1924, the university’s department of religion split off to form a separate Christian Church seminary and “college of applied Christianity,” known variously as the School of Religion and the College of Religion.
Butler merged with the Indianapolis Teacher’s College, founded by Eliza Cooper Blaker, to form the university’s second college in 1930. The College of Business Administration was founded in 1937, and the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences was founded in 1945, following a merger that included the Indianapolis College of Pharmacy. Following a merger with the Arthur Jordan Conservatory of Music, the Jordan College of Fine Arts, the university’s fifth college, was established in 1951. Butler’s School of Religion, founded in 1924, became self-sufficient in 1958 and is now known as the Christian Theological Seminary.
