The University of North Carolina is the state of North Carolina’s multi-campus public university system. The UNC System, which oversees the state’s 16 public universities as well as the NC School of Science and Mathematics, is commonly referred to as the UNC System to distinguish it from its flagship, UNC-Chapel Hill.
