The university is named after Philip William Otterbein, the founder of the United Brethren Church.
William Hannibal Thomas, Otterbein’s first African-American student, was attacked and insulted by white students when he enrolled in 1859. The university advised him that his prolonged enrolment “put the school’s very survival in jeopardy,” and that if he did not withdraw voluntarily after 10 weeks, he would be expelled. A Black student did not receive a degree from Otterbein until 1893.
