Sir John Kerr, the Governor-General of Australia, was the honored guest of the occasion. The first lectures were held in 1975, with 510 students enrolled in undergraduate programs. The university was embroiled in controversy in late 2018 after an influx of international students, many of whom were alleged to be “lacking in English language and technological abilities.” The ABC’s Four Corners investigation in 2019 found that standards had deteriorated further, with allegations of foreign students being recruited as “cash cows.”

The university launched a new identity in May 2021, replacing the old banksia logo with a streamlined “MU” logo that was designed to be “contemporary and future-focused,” as well as represent the university’s dedication to being a “progressive,” “free thinking” university.
