✅ More About Thompson Rivers University (TRU)
Thompson Rivers University (TRU) is a public research and teaching university that offers undergraduate and graduate degrees as well as vocational training. Its main campus is in Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada, and its name is derived from the North and South Thompson rivers, which meet at Kamloops. The university includes a satellite campus in Williams Lake, British Columbia, as well as a TRU-Open Learning distant education division. Through its TRU World branch, it has a number of international collaborations.
TRU’s Open Learning section provides 140 on-campus programmes and about 60 online or distance programmes, including trades apprenticeships, vocational certificates and diplomas, bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and law.
TRU’s 250-acre main campus in Kamloops is located on McGill Road in the city’s southwest Sahali neighbourhood, overlooking the Thompson River’s North and South Forks, from which the university gets its name. The campus features 40 acres of gardens and the province’s largest arboretum. For 880 students, residences provide on-campus lodging. Kamloops is a tiny city of 90,280 people in British Columbia’s southwestern interior, in the semi-arid grasslands of the Thompson-Nicola region, on the traditional territories of the Secwepemc (Shuswap) people. TRU has regional centres at 100 Mile House, Clearwater, Barriere, Ashcroft, and Lillooet, as well as a satellite campus in Williams Lake, BC’s Cariboo-Chilcotin region. The Open Learning division reaches out to students all across the world.
The BC provincial government chose Kamloops, the largest population centre in the Thompson-Okanagan and Cariboo-Chilcotin regions, as the site for one of several new two-year regional colleges to provide academic and vocational programmes outside the urban centres served by the province’s three universities. Cariboo College was established by the Province in 1970, and classes for 367 full-time and 200 part-time students began in September 1970, first at the Kamloops Indian Residential School.
Cariboo university offered two-year academic programmes that allowed students to transfer to UBC, SFU, and the newly established University of Victoria (UVic). In addition, the college established vocational training programmes to meet the demands of the region’s forestry, mining, and other businesses. Following the college’s September 1971 move to the new campus under construction on McGill Road, Cariboo’s vocational section, currently known as the School of Trades and Technology, was established. W.A.C. Bennett, the Premier of British Columbia, officially launched the vocational wing in May 1972. Cariboo merged with the Kamloops Vocational School in 1974, under government authority, to provide training for in-demand occupations in Kamloops and the region.
