✅ More About Reading University
Reading University is a public university in Reading, Berkshire, England. It was established in 1892 as University College, Reading, as an extension college of the University of Oxford. The institution was granted the authority to grant its own degrees by royal charter from King George V in 1926, making it the only university to do so between the two world wars. The university is commonly referred to as a red brick university, owing to its original foundation in the nineteenth century.
There are four major campuses in Reading. In the United Kingdom, the campuses on London Road and Whiteknights are in Reading, while Greenlands is on the banks of the Thames in Buckinghamshire. It also has a campus in Malaysia’s Iskandar Puteri. Since 2016, the university has been divided into 16 academic schools. The institution’s annual income for 2016–17 was £275.3 million, with £35.4 million coming from research grants and contracts, and an expenditure of £297.5 million.
The University of Reading’s origins can be traced back to the Schools of Art and Science, which were founded in Reading in 1860 and 1870, respectively. Christ Church, a college of the University of Oxford, established the College of Reading as an extension college in 1892. Sir Halford John Mackinder, a geographer, was the first President, and the college’s first home was the old hospitium building behind Reading Town Hall. Reading Town Council transferred the Schools of Art and Science to the new college the same year.
In 1901, the new college received its first treasury grant. The Palmer family gave it a site three years later, which is now the university’s London Road Campus. The same family contributed to the establishment of Wantage Hall in 1908 and the Research Institute in Dairying in 1912.
