✅ More About The University of Waikato
Waikato University is a comprehensive university. The university’s main campus, which opened in 1964, is established in Hamilton, New Zealand. In Tauranga, there is a second campus. In the fields of education, social sciences, and management, the university makes a significant, research-driven contribution, and it is a leader in environmental science, marine and freshwater ecology, engineering, and computer science. Health, Engineering, Computer Science, Management, Mori and Indigenous Studies, the Arts, Psychology, Social Sciences, and Education are among the degrees available.
Regional and national leaders saw the need for a new university in the mid-1950s and lobbied the University of New Zealand (UNZ) and the government to build one in Hamilton. Their campaign coincided with a school deficit in the region, and after years of campaigning, then-Minister of Education Phil Skoglun agreed to establish a teachers’ college in the area. In 1960, the newly established Hamilton Teachers’ College and a budding university (originally a division of the University of Auckland) joined forces at Ruakura to form a combined campus.
The two universities moved to their new location in 1964, and Governor-General Sir Bernard Fergusson officially opened the University of Waikato the following year.
The university had a School of Humanities and a School of Social Sciences at the time. A School of Science was established in 1969. The Waikato Management School was founded in 1972, followed by Computer Science and Computing Services in 1973, and the School of Law in 1990.
Mori studies were envisioned as a significant part of the new university from the start, and the Centre for Mori Studies and Research was established in the School of Social Sciences in 1972. In 1996, a separate School of Mori and Pacific Development was established, which was renamed Te Pua Wnanga ki te Ao, Faculty of Mori and Indigenous Studies in 2016. The School of Arts and Social Sciences was formed in 1999 when the previous Schools of Humanities and Social Sciences were united.
