Cranfield University was founded in 1946 as the College of Aeronautics at RAF Cranfield, which was then a Royal Air Force installation. Roxbee Cox, afterwards Lord Kings Norton, who was appointed as the college’s first governor in 1945 and later served as vice-chair and (from 1962) head of the board, had a significant role in the college’s development. He spearheaded the college’s diversification efforts, which resulted in the establishment of the Cranfield University School of Management in 1967, and he successfully petitioned for a royal charter and degree-awarding powers. When these were granted in 1969, he became the Cranfield Institute of Technology’s first chancellor, a position he held until 1997.
