The University of King’s College, Canada’s oldest chartered university, is a tight-knit and lively academic community in coastal Halifax, N.S. It offers degrees in arts, science, music and journalism, and is renowned for its humanities and journalism offerings.
Most King’s students begin in the Foundation Year Program (FYP), an intensive, interdisciplinary program that immerses students in the humanities. Students read and discuss fundamental works in philosophy, history, literature, drama and science from ancient to contemporary periods. Lectures, tutorials and bi-weekly essay assignments enhance students’ abilities in analysis, argumentation and expression.
King’s offers three interdisciplinary honours programs that allow students to engage more deeply with questions and themes that arise from FYP. The History of Science and Technology (HOST) explores the interactions between society and science throughout history such as how science has evolved in relation to politics, religion and the arts. The Contemporary Studies Program (CTMP) studies social and political thought in the contemporary world. The Early Modern Studies Program (EMSP) examines the thought and culture of the sixteenth to early-nineteenth centuries.
