Canada opens the door to permanent residency for 90,000 international graduates and essential workers living in Canada. This means if you wish to study in Canada, you might be eligible in the future to settle in Canada permanently.
Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino announced this new policy that will grant permanent status to those who study in Canada and temporary workers contributing to Canada’s economy.
All the temporary workers working in hospitals and care homes and on the frontlines and those graduates who have special skills will be the focus of the new policy. If you study in Canada and desire to become its citizen, this opportunity is for you.
Marco Mendicino shared, “Canada’s path to prosperity lies through immigration.” He further added, “the newcomers will come and roll up their sleeves and contribute and give back in our health care sector and many other vital areas of the economy.”
He also tweeted and wrote, “The pandemic has shone a bright light on the incredible contributions of newcomers. This new policy will help those with temporary status to plan their futures in Canada, play a key role in our economic recovery and help us build back better.”
The eligibility criteria are workers should have a minimum of 1 year of Canadian work experience. In contrast, those who study in Canada must have completed an eligible Canadian post-secondary program within the last four years.
If you study in Canada, then you can apply for permanent residence. The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will start accepting applications from May 6. Applications will be accepted under the following three streams:
- For temporary workers in health care, there will be 20,000 applications.
- For temporary workers in selected essential occupations, there will be 30,000 applications.
- For students who graduated from a Canadian institution, there will be around 40,000 applications.
The applications are opened till November 5, 2022, and around 90,000 new permanent residents will be getting accepted.
The president of the Business Council of Canada, Goldy Hyder, said that this new program would strengthen Canada’s economy.
“Immigrants have long played an important role in supporting Canadians’ high standard of living and building vibrant communities,” he said.
He further added, “They fill labor market shortages, offset our aging population and broaden the tax base, thereby helping fund social and public services.”
